Discovering the Champions of Tomorrow

With the Kent Indoor Rowing Finals only a few weeks away, we thought it would be a good time to take a closer look at British Rowing’s World Class Start programme.

Established in 2001, and funded by the National Lottery, it has since developed into one of Great Britain’s most successful talent identification programmes and can list Helen Glover, Alex Gregory, Heather Stanning and Moe Sbihi among its graduates.

There are a number of Start centres around the UK that are used as training bases for those in the programme and each one is hosted by a local rowing club.

GB Rowing also employ a full time professional coach in each of the Start centres who recruit and develop the athletes in the programme. Athletes attend regular training camps at home and overseas in order to monitor progression and build camaraderie with fellow athletes.

Despite the quality of coaching and the standards of facilities available to those enrolled in World Class Start, one of the most attractive elements of the programme is that you need NO prior rowing experience to get involved—all you need is the right physique and a can do attitude!

“Start has been solely responsible for shaping me into the rower I am today”, Matt Jenner, Start Programme athlete 2016
