Lady Boswell Win School Games Flag Title

Thursday 27th April saw the University of Kent play host to the first ever Kent School Games Flag Football competition.

Having first been introduced to children across the county three years ago, and been a demo sport at last year’s Kent School Games, AFD, who were instrumental in the growth of the game in Kent, worked with Kent Sport to bring together the first ever competition.

Natalie Harris, Countryside, Leisure and Sports Events Manager for Kent Sport comments: When we first introduced Flag Football as a demo sport at the Kent School Games, there was a limited amount of activity taking place in the county. Giving young people the opportunity to ‘have a go’ sparked an interest from schools attending school games events and has led to a growth in the sport, so we’re pleased to have introduced it to School Games.”

The tournament at the University of Kent certainly lived up to expectations as eight teams from across the county, came to Canterbury to battle out for the title.

Children taking part in skills sessions

The day started with coaching and skills training from Joe Walker, AFD’s Coach and Education Co-ordinator and GB Students Coach. This gave all the children a chance to refine and hone their skills in preparation for the afternoon’s tournament.

Not that many needed much additional help! The children showed some great understanding of the game and the skills involved and some great games played out during the course of the tournament play. Some early contenders for the crown came out early, and all teams got to participate in a minimum of three games.

In the end the final was played out between Lady Boswell’s from Sevenoaks, and St Peter’s of Broadstairs. Both had met earlier in the competition, with Lady Boswell’s victorious on that occasion, but St Peter’s had fought back through eliminator rounds to get a second opportunity. The final didn’t disappoint with both sides showing great skills and ability to score touchdowns but it was Lady Boswell’s who took the title remaining undefeated throughout the day.

Action from the final

“We are so delighted to see the fun and enjoyment the children have had today,” said Riki Samuel, Chairman of AFD. “Since we first introduced flag football to schools a couple of years ago we’ve been working towards such a day happening, and it’s great to see it not only take place, but the level of skill shown by some of these pupils. We have had great support from the team at Kent Sport and are already planning our 2018 event!”

Focus now switches to the secondary schools event which will take place on Tuesday 27th June at Polo Farm in Canterbury. For more information on this event go to www.afdlimited.com/product-category/afd-events/ or email schools@afdlimited.com
